The Gupta and Mauryan Empires share similarities and differences when ruling South Asia. Both empires unified India and established their capitals of Pataliputra on the eastern Ganges. In addition, both empires collected tax on all agricultural productions. Moreover, both empires fell due to outside military pressures. Although they share similarities, the Gupta and Mauryan Empires have distinct differences. For example, the Mauryan Empire ruled a much larger area than the Gupta Empire, The Mauryan Empire included all of India besides the southernmost tip where, the Gupta Empire ruled most of north-central India (found on Barrens book page 102.)
