Persistence of Guinea Bissau Culture Harry @ Kyaw Htet International School of Myanmar Persistence of Guinea Bissau Culture Mahatma Gandhi once said “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and the soul of its people”. Similar to the people mentioned by Gandhi, the people of Guinea Bissau value their native culture. Although Guinea Bissau was colonized by the Portuguese and the French with variety of foreign influences, its people managed to cut through those influences and were able to uphold their precious culture. Despite having been colonized by both Portuguese and the French, the indigenous culture of Guinea Bissau remains persistent to be strong, which can be seen in their cultural festivals, food, and sports. Even though people of Guinea Bissau eat fish, it is not considered as their main dish since most of their main dishes do not include fish. As rice crop is one of the abundant crops in Guinea Bissau, rice is consumed as a dietary ingredient. By eating daily as a main dish, rice is considered to be the king of the food in Guinea Bissau. The widespread of rice consumers in Guinea Bissau, mostly everyone in the country, has been a shield to the foreign food, making them as a secondary dish as a part of the Guinea Bissau diet. Food is a daily consumption of a person in life; however foreign interaction with the daily activity of Guinea Bissau did not cause a change in its cultural…show more content…
