Garden city of Putrajaya • History Prang Besar used to be Putrajaya before. In 1918, British founded it and named it as Air Hitam. The land area expanded from 800 acres to 8000 acres. The area was surrounded by estates like Estet Raja Alang, Estet Galloway and Estet Bukit Prang. In the late of 1980s, the Malaysia’s fourth prime minister, Tun Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad has the vision of a new Federal Government Administrative Centre to replace Kuala Lumpur as the administrative capital. The reason he wanted to shift the seat of government from Kuala Lumpur because of overcrowding and congestion in Kuala Lumpur. The government planned to reserved about 38% of the area for the green spaces to enhanced the natural landscape. The plan incorporated a network of open spaces and wide boulevards. In August 1995, the construction for the garden city concept has began and it was Malaysia’s biggest project and one of Southeast Asia’s largest project. The estimated cost was US$8.1 billion. The fun fact is there are only 10% of the materials imported and the entire project was designed and constructed by Malaysian companies. Due to this, Putrajaya has been a leader in Southeast Asia for the project. They also promoted the “Green City” idea of buildings that use grayscale water management systems, efficient lighting and Gas District Cooling. These all are within the ‘low carbon cities framework’. There is also a bird breeding ground and a natural filtration system that will absorbs pollutants from upstream river water. After that, they filter it and so the water become Class 2B quality that is suitable for body contact upon entering the lake.
