While it might be true that it was folly for Athens to go to war in Sicily, I disagree with Gadfly’s conclusion that democracies cannot wage successful wars. His conclusion does not follow from the premises due to his hasty generalization which assumes that one group’s failure is indicative of the failure of an entire system of government. Gadfly’s argument would be analogous to a teacher giving a test and having a person with blue eyes fail the test and then using that to conclude that all blue eyed people fail all tests. First, for the sake of clarity, when I use the word “success” in regards to a war, it is synonymous with victory, thus a country waging a successful war would be victorious over its foes.
