FBLA/PBL stands for Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda. Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) an organization for preparing students for careers in business, entrepreneurship, information technology, and management. FBLA-PBL’s business and leadership programs at the national, state, and local level are concentrated in three areas: Service, Education, and Progress. FBLA’-PBL’s concept was developed in 1937 by Dr. Hamden L. Forkner of Columbia University. FBLA-PBL is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, and organized on local, state, and national levels. Georgia FBLA has a rich history in their 68 years. The beginning of Future Business Leaders of America in Georgia started at Hapeville High School on December 3, 1947. The chapter, organized under Mrs. Catharine Merrill, was chartered by the national organization as Chapter No. 83. Georgia, the fourth state chapter to be chartered, received its state charter in 1949. Mrs. Zeb Vance of Mercer University in Macon served as Georgia’s first state adviser. Georgia FBLA has had twelve state advisers leading up to Mr. Monty Rhodes, Georgia’s current state adviser. Dr. Russell Mercer was the first Georgia FBLA State President. While serving as president, he was a student at Georgia’s Teachers’ College, now Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. Dr. Mercer is the retired State Supervisor of Business and Office Education. The Business and Office Education Service of the Georgia Department of Education assumed the responsibility of Georgia FBLA in July 1960. Georgia FBLA remained under the Department of Education’s direct responsibility until 1998, at which time the Georgia Department of Education gave this responsibility to the Georgia FBLA Board of Directors while still remaining as an indirect supervisor of the state chapter’s activities. In 1998, Georgia FBLA, Inc., was formed and established a Board of Directors to serve as the governing body of Georgia FBLA. The Board of Directors consists of twelve voting members…show more content… They plan to develop competent, aggressive business leadership, strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work, create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise, encourage members in the development of individual projects that contribute to the improvement of home, business, and community, develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism, encourage and practice efficient money management, encourage scholarship and promote school loyalty, assist students in the establishment of occupational goals, and facilitate the transition from school to work.
