Tragic Hero in Modern Life and Literature
According to Webster’s dictionary a tragic hero is “a flaw in character that brings about the downfall of the hero of a tragedy”. In both modern day society and literature there are examples of tragic heroes. Even though tragic heroes can exist in different time periods, they both succumb to disaster by their own doings and are ultimately responsible for their downfall. In Mary Shelley’s, classic novel Frankenstein, the protagonist, Victor Frankenstein, displays his flaw to the reader by making poor decisions. Like Victor Frankenstein, Lindsay Lohan is someone who displayed her flaw, to society. Both literary and real life heroes have only themselves to blame for their failure, because it is their rash…show more content… Although, what he soon discovers is that even though he may have had good intentions, his creation instantly becomes the village’s nightmare. Believing that he was a tremendous scientist, Victor wanted to present his skills to the village, but it is shortly discovered that his trait of being ambitious, is his tragic flaw. What leads to his downfall are his careless decisions. If Victor had never created his monster not only would all his loved ones still be alive, but also Victor, himself, would still be alive. Likewise Lindsay Lohan is responsible for pushing her loved ones aside and abusing substances.
In our day and age, society expects celebrities to fall victim to addictions and substance abuse, and sadly for Lindsay Lohan, this was true. When she was younger she starred in motion pictures that were popular among adolescents. She was looked up to and admired by her general audience until she broke; she was all over social media with headlines next to her face saying, “Drug Addict”. It was Lindsay’s vulnerability and carelessness that led to her tragic downfall. Fortunately, Lindsey didn’t pass away like Victor had, but the both of them followed similar paths to their
