Florence was the strongest and most powerful city state in the European Renaissance. I believe it was also the city state that represented a new way of thinking or a “rebirth” of ideas. The city state of Florence supported architects, artists and scholars. Florence is also known for its citizens’ different ideas, which were mostly promoted. People with lots of wealth, or aristocrats, had places of responsibility in the government. Florence is built on the Arno River in central Italy so it was very accessible for trade. Florence is well known for the Wool Trade. The Medici family looked over Florence and made it beautiful, strong and extremely wealthy. So wealthy in fact that they bought a few neighbouring cities, villages and towns! The culture of the city was very important to the citizens. The Medici family wholeheartedly supported artists, architects, and scholars. The city thrived and many people came from all over to live in Florence because it was so wealthy. Even more artists, architects, and scholars traveled to Florence because they were supported and wanted to do different jobs. The city was full of art, architectural marvels and many different scholars’ ideas and thoughts. However, the wealthy people were important to society and were still ranked way over the peasants. After a new social class, which was the merchant class arose, there was a way to get out of your class in the feudal system. Many peasants became merchants and started a new life.
