The speaker of “First Poem for You” is Kim Addonizio. Within the poem, emotions were shown towards her lover tattoos. The poem ton could be described as depressed and complicated. My reaction to the poem differ from the speaker. Throughout the poem the speaker is making a connection with her lovers tattoos other than having a connection with him. The poet is having a conversation but rather a connection with her lover tattoos. The word or phrase that I do not understand is serpent and facing a dragon. Serpent in the poem is interpreted as evil forces trying to tear the couple apart. These forces are facing a dragon which is symbolized as a warrior. Imagery was used throughout the entirety of the poem whether it was touch or visual. In lines 1-2 it says “I like to touch your tattoos in complete darkness. Imagery can also be interpreted as the speaker or poet feels more comfortable touching whom I assume is her lover. Also, she can hide her fears or worries. In lines 9 it says” I love to kiss the pictures in your skin. The speaker is saying that she adores her lover tattoos so much, that whatever happens between them, she has the tattoos. In line 14, it says that “She touches them in the dark but touch them trying It is clearly saying she is trying to make a relationship as permanent as the tattoos. It can clearly be understood that the speaker and her lover has grown apart from each
