Kim Addonizio was born in Washington D.C. She attended San Francisco where she received he BA and MA. Kim Addonizio is also a poet who writes her poems based off of tattoos, romance, and physical love. She has written many poems but this particular poem caught my attention. “First Poem for You” is a poem written by Kim Addonizio herself. In this poem she expresses her feelings towards her lover tattoos. This poem can be interpreted better only sentence by sentence instead of line by line. In lines 1 and 2, Addonizio writes “I like to touch your tattoos in complete darkness, when I can’t see them”. The poet is clearly saying that she has more comfort in touching her lover tattoos in complete darkness rather than in the daylight. She may also feel as if it’s more of a…show more content…
In lines 3 and 4, Addonizio writes “I’m sure of where they are, know by the heart the neat lines of lightening pulsing just above your nipple”. It is basically saying that she is sure where her lover tattoos are located. In lines 5,6, and 7, Addonizio writes “can find, as if by instinct, the blue swirls of water on your shoulder were a serpent, facing a dragon. This clearly is saying the blue swirls of water is a representation of the pureness of their relationship. The serpent can also represent evil forces that are trying to bombard in to their relationship and tear things apart. In line 8,9, and 10, Addonizio writes “When I pull you to me, taking you until we’re spent and quiet on the sheets, I love to kiss the pictures in your skin”. This is clearly saying that she gets much more enjoyment out of kissing her lover’s tattoos than get it out of him. She has more of a bond with the tattoos.
