Firoozeh Dumas utilizes metaphor to demonstrate the theme of the evolution of customs.Toward the exposition's start Firoozeh sets up how she and her family wound up living in America and why they began holding dinners for almost every Iranian family who settled in the country. At the very beggining she describes “ My mother’s main ingredient in cooking was resentment..” Firoozeh applies the words ‘ main ingredient’ and ‘resentment’ as a metaphor contrasting the nourishment with disdain. Including the word' cooking' that prompts food , giving us the sense of recollections of home ,beginning to feel a part of a community and making this new place like a home when everybody meets up to have dinner at her home.
