So many questions answered, yet so many remain after watching the documentary Inside The Teenage Brain, by Sarah Spinks. A very well composed and educational film. As a mother of four one who is sixteen years old, I have recently experienced much of what was portrayed on the documentary. Without any formal education or training we are all speedy to fault hormones and move on. What surprised me to learn in the film is that the adolescent has a growth spurt between the ages of thirteen and fifteen which thickens the gray matter in the frontal lobe. In the film it is mentioned that “your child’s body has not been invaded”. I thought that to be humorous in the sense that I have had that same thought. When originally reading the questions posed, I thought I would not be able to answer the question. What did you learn about your own adolescent identity development by watching this documentary? I was a mother at only eleven days after turning the age of sixteen, I was going through my adolescent changes at the same time I was going through pregnancies changes as well. Marcia identifies Moratorium status as a person who is in a crisis, but has made no commitment. Foreclosure status is identified as a person who has made a commitment without having gone through a crisis. Identity diffusion status is a person who is not in the midst of a crisis and who has made no commitment. Identity achievement status a person who has been through a crisis and reached a commitment or occupational goal. By far Identity achievement status is what I learned best describes me. A sixteen year old single mother in a crisis. Residing with her elderly grandmother and no education, made a commitment to attend night school to achieve her General Equivalency Diploma, while working two part time jobs during the day to support her new born baby
