Ms. Marvel’s Fight against Herself.
“Ms. Marvel no normal volume 1” by G. Willow and Adrian Alphona revolves around the emergence of a very unique super hero, who faces multiple insecurities and lacks self-identity. Her name is Kamala Khan and as the plot of the comic unfolds it allows the reader to see how she develops as a new confident proud teenager that finally becomes comfortable in her own skin, with the help of her newfound superpowers. Various aspects of the comic allowed it to give a strong message regarding self-appreciation. Aspects such as the deep thought behind each character, the coincidence of the nature of her powers, a more than fitting art style, the cultural components, and a touch of humor.
Kamala is modernization of…show more content… Being a New Jersey girl that comes from a Pakistani Muslim family; it is easy to see why Kamala would have a hard time feeling normal. Her family’s culture is deeply imbedded in the book and although the reader might not be Pakistani or Muslim, the struggles she faces with her heritage and her parents disciplinary nature are definitely relevant to a lot of us. The members of Kamala’s family all take religion and their traditions very seriously. Kamala’s brother is that one extremely religious person who believes living for their religion is the only thing they should do. This is a harsh comparison to Kamala who is so conflicted by the traditions she was raised with that she has an especially hard time following them. We see this in Kamala when she struggles to stay away from pork. Her parents are very strict with her, for the same reason all our parents are, they only want the best for her. It makes her conflicts more appealing and…show more content… The features in each character are detailed but at the same time cartoony. This is okay because we know they live in an alternate universe where people with superpowers are no new news, it’s not meant to be as realistic as possible. Even with such cartoony art style, Alphona effectively manages to give Kamala an easy-to-read face and an ordinary girl's body; she also does not wear the usual heroine revealing outfit mostly because it gives her "an epic wedgie." but also because she feels naked this is Kamala’s first step to accepting who she is. This also helps eliminate that sexual appeal component that I previously mentioned, classical marvel heroines tend to possess. Alphona does a fine job with the illustrations of Kamala that show her with oversized or undersized body parts; such as super long legs or one huge hands. We also see an overly noticeable color differences between when the Avengers were shown compared to when there is a scene with Kamala’s parents. When the avengers emerge or when she is using her powers everything is much brighter and livelier but when her parents are in the scene Alphona uses dull neutral colors. This might have been done to express Kamala’s feelings when she is around the Khans versus her feelings when she free and surrounded by
