Feudal Japan was a time of change and war where three separate warrior classes ruled. By the end of the 12th Century, the Shi or warrior class, maintained control over the people of Japan through a feudal hierarchy. Feudalism in Japan occurred between 1185 and 1868. During this time the Emperor had began to lose power due to a series of civil wars. Instead of being overtaken completely, the emperor gave leaders of armies the title of Shogun. These leaders controlled smaller pieces of land rather than having one emperor to rule the whole country. It was during this time that the emperor lost his real power because the three groups of the Shi class, the Daimyo, Shoguns and the Samurai were so powerful. The emperor appeared at ceremonies, celebrations…show more content… The Shogun was a highly trained military officer who was in control of his own armed forces, as Darlington, R e.t stated “In 1192 the Emperor appointed the head of the minamoto clan, Minamoto no Yoritomo, as Shogun, to lead the Japanese armed forces.” (Darlington, R et, 2012 pg 228). furthermore the shogun period started in the 12th century. Shoguns ruler until the Meiji Restoration of the emperors in 1868. the imperial military forces were appointed the name of shogun as Darlington stats again “Emperor kammu bestowed the title of seii taishogun (‘barbarian-conquering great general’) on the commander-in-chief of the military forces and gave him a great deal of power to maintain order throughout the country. this title was later shortened to shogun and adopted by the head of the imperial military forces.” (Darlington, R ,.et, 2012 pg 230). the civil war era ended and the when Tokugawa Ieyasu, first became Tokugawa shoguns and became ruler over his rival warlords. the daimyo still existed under the shogunate, but they were no longer a part of the central government in edo. “They ordered all daimyo to travel to Edo every second year to pay respect to the shogun”(Darlington, R ,.et, 2012 pg
