Homeless youth are further disadvantaged if they represent a visible minority in regards to sexual diversity and race, whose social status significantly increases the difficulties associated with living on the streets. First, youth who are a visible minority, in regards to race, experience increased criminalisation and hardship while living on the streets. Minorities experience increased police attention, without demonstrating increased reason or suspicion to law enforcement. A homeless youth who is of a visible race minority, such as black or Aboriginal, experience increased difficulties living on the streets, however youth who express sexual diversity suffer more than any other visible minority. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer or questioning individual’s experience significant hardships, unparalleled by any other racial or social group. LGBTQ homeless make up a large proportion of the homeless population, where it is recognised that 25 to 40 percent of homeless youth belong to this group (Addressing the Discrimination, n.d.). These youth are much more likely to end up on the street due to discrimination at home such as abuse, homophobia and transphobia. They are also more likely to stay on the streets due to prejudice, which makes it difficult to find employment, stable housing, healthcare, and education (Addressing the Discrimination, n.d.).
