Tartuffe was written during the time when religion was considered a very important component of society. While reading the play, the first noticeable detail is how Moliere employed satire to criticize the actions of the Catholic Church. In the play, Moliere creates different situations and characters to represent the hypocrisy behind the Catholic Church. One of the main examples shown throughout the play, is how Tartuffe pretends to be a faithful, religious, and sacred man in front of the people. However, behind doors he is a completely different person.
