Topic: Bildungsroman - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Synopsis – The word’ bildungsroman’ is a German term, coined by Karl Morgenstern, a philologist, and later popularized by Wilhelm Dilthey, meaning ‘novel of education or formation’. A ‘Bildungsroman traces the moral, spiritual and psychological development of the protagonist from early childhood or youth till adulthood, depicted against the backdrop of the vices and conditions of the society of that time, which put the protagonist, an ordinary, sensitive person, through a deep sense of loss, or a moral dilemma, which ultimately makes them grow as people and changes the course of their lives. The plot of To Kill a Mockingbird follows Jean Louise (Scout) Finch as she, along with her brother Jem embarks on a journey of self-discovery and disillusionment; her values and sense of morality grow stronger as she begins to understand and resent the harsh realities of the society she has grown up in. Scout and Jem are deeply fascinated by the reclusive and mysterious Arthur “Boo” Radley, who has seldom been seen outside his home in several years and whom the adults are clearly uncomfortable talking about.
