2.2.8 YELLOW FEVER Yellow fever is a zoonosis indigenous to some tropical and subtropical regions of South America and Africa. It has caused numerous epidemics with high mortality rates throughout history. Its etiologic agent is the yellow fever virus, an arbovirus of the genus Flavivirus (family Flaviviridae).27 The virus is transmitted to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Illness ranges in severity from a self-limited febrile illness to severe liver disease with bleeding. Yellow fever disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, laboratory testing, physical findings and travel history, including the possibility of exposure to infected mosquitoes.
