Just imagine, walking into a stadium, to compete in the worlds’ 3rd largest international multi-sport games. Over 54,000 people are there to cheer you on. All of your teammates, coaches, and trainers have been working so hard all their life for this special moment; the Pan American Games. The idea of the Pan Am Games was first thought of during the Olympic Congress, which occurred the same time as the 1924 Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee members from Cuba, Guatemala, and México suggested creating regional games which involve the countries of Central America. In Toronto, over 7000 athletes from Latin America, South America, the Caribbean, and North America, will put their hard work and perseverance to the test in the 2015 Pan Am Games. Across southern Ontario, there are more than 30 venues located in 16 municipalities to play in. The motto this year for the Games is “United We Play,” because the whole idea of the Pan Am Games was to unite the Americas, and to feel like one. This year, there will be 36 Pan Am sports being hosted. Some sports such as golf and rugby sevens will be introduced for the very first time. After the Pan American Games are completed, the Parapan American Games follow. This is where athletes with disabilities compete. Toronto 2015 will be the 5th edition of the Parapan Am Games, and will feature almost 2000 athletes competing in 15 sports. The first Parapan Am Games were held in Mexico City in 1999. Although the Parapan Am Games has been hosted 5 times before, this will be the first time Canada hosts them.
