Nausea and vomiting is the most common side effect of many disease processes and medications. Nausea is feeling as though you are going to be sick to your stomach or like you are going to vomit. Vomiting is the action of throwing up or expelling food and fluids from the stomach out through the mouth. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary body functions, this would include nausea. Vomiting is controlled in the brain by the reflex center. ( ) Nausea and vomiting can be caused by many things such as irritation to the stomach, motion, taste, pain, smell, inflammation, and poor blood flow. You can also have vomiting without the presence of nausea beforehand, though most patients experience nausea more often than vomiting. You may also experience nausea with dry heaving. Dry heaving, also called retching, is the movement of the stomach and esophagus without expelling vomit. There are several types of nausea and vomiting. Acute nausea and vomiting occurs twenty-four hours after the start of treatment. Delayed nausea and vomiting occurs greater than twenty-four hours after treatment. Also, it may cause malnutrition, mental status changes, erosion of the esophagus, and loss of appetite. These are all priority nursing problems. This is why it is important for nurses to teach patients that prompt reporting of nausea and vomiting is vital. When assessing patients who are suffering from uncontrolled nausea and vomiting they may present with fatigue, sore throat, decrease in appetite, increased or decreased heart rate, pallor, decreased blood pressure, increased depth and rate of respirations, and excessive salivation. Also, the nurse should monitor for hyperactive bowel sounds, change in bowel habits, vomiting of blood, frequent electrolyte monitoring, and charting strict intake and output
