The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and the Lord of the Flies by William Golding are two novels based on survival. They emphasize that is stranded in the middle of nowhere with no guidance from adults, it brings out the worst in each other, and in ourselves. In the Lord of Flies, the main character Ralph gets in a plane crash and is deserted in a deserted island with twenty some other boys. In the Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute for her sister in the annual Hunger Games in the country of Panem, where the tributes fight to the death until one tribute is remaining. All the boys on the island were at Jack’s party, except one, Simon, who was in the woods, discovering that the “beast” the other boys were afraid of, was a dead man in a parachute. When he goes to tell the other boys what he saw, he stumbles into the clearing where the boys were, they don’t recognize him and think he is the actual beast, so they kill him. “The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws” (153). Katniss and her new ally Rue were plotting the destruction of the Careers load of supplies and food when Rue got trapped in a net. She called to Katniss and Katniss managed to get her out of the net, but one of the other tributes fires a spear and it gets lodged in Rue’s stomach. Katniss, filled with anger took an arrow and shot the boy and killed him, before he had a chance to kill her. Even though Ralph didn’t know who he was killing and Katniss killed out of anger, it’s what made their fights to survive all that more
