It was once said by Martin Luther King Jr. “only when it is dark enough can you see the stars”. It demonstrates that you could view any situation better when it is at the most difficult point. When your life is filled with problems and hardships, that’s when you appreciate everything around you. It can be proven through the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and the Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. In both plays, characters find themselves and notice the goodness around them as they enter into a dark period in their life. As Willy loses his job and all the things he holds close to his heart, he discovers his family and their love for him. Likewise the younger family also finds themselves during their hardships. The younger family lives in a racist period of time and they live in an apartment with many other people. It was Walter’s dream to start a liquor store and make some money. He was tired of living in the small apartment with no money. He was very happy when the Younger family received 10000 dollars, however his happiness was short lived. Mama, Walters’s mother, wanted to buy a better house for them to live in. Walter is so upset about the liquor store that when his wife tells him about her pregnancy, he ignores her. “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it”. Walter tells mama that money is the most important thing and it can solve their financial problem and lead them to a better life. Walter loses the money he was given from Mama and soon after Walter understands that money isn’t everything.
