Ella Fitzgerald better known as “Ella” or “Lady Ella” was the first African American female jazz singer. She started singing at the age of 17. Ella’s contribution to black history was to let her jazz music flow through others ears and for them to be inspired by her. Ella was born on April 25, 1918 in Newport News, Virginia A month or so Ella moved to Yonkers close to New York City to be closer to Ella’s Aunt, Ms. Virginia who Ella stayed with for a while. Ms. Temperance, Ella’s mom went to stay with her boyfriend, Mr. Joseph De Sailva. Her mother lived with him for a while. She then attended Benjamin Franklin High School. Ella’s education was so complicated she just at a young age she was At a young age Ella wanted to become a dancer, but unfortunately due to a financial struggles her plans were altered. First she performed at the Harlem Opera House in a contest. Surprisingly she won the contest, and later leaned towards singing jazz music. Ella really enjoyed jazz music in fact she taught it to other upcoming singers. Ella Fitzgerald Ella started scatting and singing like a pro. She made her singing debut at seventeen on November 21, 1934 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Ella's name pulled in a weekly audience at the Apollo and she won the opportunity to compete in one of the earliest of its famous "Amateur Nights.” Ella accomplished so much during her time in life from 1956 to 1964. There are several reasons why I state this. Ella has accomplished singing songbooks like ‘Duke Ellington Songbook’, “The Irvin Burling Songbook”, and many more. Ella also has accomplished of being the first African- American female to sing at the Mocambo.
