Buddhism Buddhism has been a major religion for many years. It was founded by a young Indian prince, called Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha. After searching for enlightenment, he discovered the four noble truths. One of the four truths includes following the eightfold path, which was also taught by the Buddha. When Siddhartha Gautama was very young his mother died, and as a result his father sheltered him from the realities of the harsh world. His father wanted him to be a ruler. Gautama realized as a young adult that the world is filled with suffering, and he decided to set out to find a way to nirvana. The eightfold path consists of right understanding, which is thoroughly understanding the teachings of Buddha; right thought, thinking clean, pure thoughts; right speech; speaking truthfully and without harmful intentions; right actions, treating people and animals as you’d like to be treated; right work, earning a living without harming or cheating others; right effort, trying to be better and stopping bad habits; right mindfulness, being mindful of yourself and your surroundings; right meditation, meditating daily. Many Buddhists believe if you follow the eightfold path, you will reach enlightenment. Buddhists also believe in the five precepts.
