The antagonist of the story is Mr. Edward Hyde. He is described as pale, dwarfish and having an overall deformity of features. Mr. Hyde is inclined to a sense of asperity shown in his encounters with others. From a perspective of people he meets, they immediately notice he is not identifiable as welcoming and often gives an impression resulting in their instant dislike. The protagonist of the story is Dr. Henry Jekyll. He is a doctor who has the best interest of his close friends, as well as a genuine and affectionate attitude. He is a broad, 50 year old man who presents himself with a “slyish cast” (Stevenson 21); however, is none the less benevolent. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Throughout the story Dr. Jekyll is a very polite and helpful man. However, his alternate personality is a malicious man who tends to hurt others. In the story, after Hyde does something harmful, Jekyll is filled with guilt and remorse at his other half’s actions. While living my life, it is in my nature to be kind to others as Dr. Jekyll is. I try my best to help others and avoid rudeness towards them, despite how they treat me, although, every once in a while, on impulse, I say something disrespectful or rude to a person. Sometimes they are innocent, and I end up verbally attacking them as Hyde did, but in a less life halting, destructive manner. Just as Hyde could not, I could not take the words I said to that person back, and like Jekyll, wonder why I acted the way I did. In Jekyll’s letter, he discusses how the thoughts of Hyde began to leak into his original person’s brain. If looking at Hyde as the dark side of a person, and Jekyll as the good side, I can relate to split of what is good and what is not. Sometimes, I will think rude thoughts of people for no reason. I did not think of these thoughts to be mean purposefully, the thoughts were automatically thought without any analyzation of their content. This is how Jekyll felt as Hyde’s attitude started to overcome his conscious, and he felt like he was not in control of himself. Another minor connection I have with Mr. Utterson is his curiosity to discover the truth. Like Utterson, I enjoy investigating when there is a problem. Overall, my major connection to the story is that there is a small evil side within each person, including me, and sometimes one side becomes more apparent, despite what I want to
