Many people confuse correlation with causation. Looking at correlation shows how two things may be related, but it does not show that the two things cause each other. There can be a third variable that is the actual caution. This newspaper article makes the statement that “Vitamins cause Crime.” The research study says that there is a positive correlation between vitamins and crime rates, but this does not mean that people taking vitamins causes crime. To test this statement the researcher could do a double-blind study. A double-blind study is when the experimenter and the participants do not know who is receiving the treatment.
