The American Civil War was a war fought from 1861 to 1865 to gain back the independence of the Confederacy back to the Union. There were a total of 34 states as of January 1861 and seven of those Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America, known as the "Confederacy" or the "South".
