Did the Prince Make the “Right” Decision (An analysis of the Prince’s decision making pertaining to Romeo’s banishment) What is right when three deaths result from anger and revenge? A situations such as this cannot be left unsettled, but what is the right thing to do? In some situations, there is no “right” thing to do. This is one of those times. Romeo had killed Tybalt, a relative of the Prince, however, Tybalt had killed Mercutio, a good friend of Romeo. This situation provides no easy fix, or solution that will completely free Prince from the oppositions of others. He simply did the best he could in a split second. Only the friar and the nurse knew the events that had recently taken place, therefore, the Prince has no way of knowing how this would affect the situation. Romeo is crushed when he hears the verdict drawn from his actions, yet he does not seem to realize the fact that this outcome still gives him and his new bride hope. Had the Prince decreed that Romeo should be put to death, there would be no chance that Romeo and Juliet could ever be together. His unsuspecting decision is as much of a blessing as could have been given, without destroying the reputation of fairness he needs to uphold. One thing that the Prince is fully aware of, is the feud between the Montague and Capulet houses. He knows that all contact betwixt these two enemies is shaky ground. The conclusion reached pertaining to Romeo’s punishment must be decided carefully. If he is given the death penalty, then the Montagues will be outraged and argue the unfairness of it. On the other hand, were the Prince to decree that Romeo is not to be punished, then the Capulets would argue that Tybalt’s death would have not been avenged. Both houses have a much different point of view on the situation, and what should be done about it
