In the novel, “The Diary of a Young Girl,” by Anne Frank, edited by Otto Frank and Mirjam Pressler, an important character is Anne Frank. Her need and drive to survive is evident throughout the book. Anne’s disgust at the treatment of Jews and her teenage thoughts are some important characteristics that readers embrace as they read through her diary. Anne gives us a view on humanity at its’ most animalistic state. It shows us how vulnerable the world is and at any given moment the world could fall to its’ knees once again. This is why it is imperative to study her character. We see evidence of this when she says to Kitty about how she disagrees with her mother about hiding in the annexe. “Mother and I had another run-in. I finally told Daddy that I love "him" more than I do Mother, to which he replied that it was just a passing phase, but I don’t think so. I simply can’t stand Mother, and I have to force myself not to slap her across the face.” This emotional entry into her diary is something that most typical teenage girls can relate to. We also see that the trials and tribulations that any ordinary adolescent goes through are well under way. For Anne they were perhaps exacerbated because of the restricting living conditions she found herself at the time. Conditions were less than ideal and nobody could get away from anybody else in the annexe. When Anne wanted her “space” or “alone time”, she was not able to get it. So like any caged animal, the tensions mounted until it caused fighting amongst her and the rest of the people in the annexe. Via Anne’s eyes, we are able to understand that she is a typical teenage girl, living in a typical world. Her story allows us to enter into her world of what she had to live throw.
