T- Lastly, we can also see the main themes shown through this story are the ideas of small town attitudes and mentality and society’s growing materialism and lack of moral values. Ideas about individuality, appreciating life and looking for inner beauty rather than judging people by appearances are also present in this text. In the short story ‘The Ace of Diamonds Gang’, written by Owen Marshall, we see childhood themes and the coming of age. E- In childhood themes, the questions are; What made the Ace of Diamonds gang special for the boys? Was their belief in the gang realistic? The gang was special for the boys as it provided a break from their otherwise boring provincial lives, and gave them a chance to live out some of the exploits from the outlaw and crime books they loved. By living to the fullest, without giving a mind to society and being different in every way helps portray who they really are, to help strive for success.They’re symbolic of how society has become materialistic and shallow. Mr Van Gogh in comparison has similarities to the Ace of Diamonds gang as he also has moral and passionate about life and beauty. He embodies the qualities which everyone should strive to obtain. The contrast between Mr Van Gogh and the Ace of Diamonds Gang also shows the theme that true beauty is on the inside and that you should not judge people by appearances.
