The short story, “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pockets,” and the song “The Ledge” both focus on a character high above everyone else on a building. In the short story, a man who is devoted to his work loses an important paper through the window and goes to retrieve it. In the song, a young man stands on a ledge prepared to jump, committing suicide. The two works, although focuses on different plots, still contain many similar elements. The two pieces can be connected in many ways, but with some of their key differences their relationship seems unexpected.
Foremost, the works have characters in the pieces both would be assumed to hold negatives views on life. In the song this is much more apparent, as the character is about to commit suicide.
