The first item I chose for this project represents a side of the main character in this story, which is a mask. The first reason I chose this item was because August's character is clearly shown in the book, he doesn't like it when other people stare at his face because most of their stares are rude and a disgusted expression. On Halloween, he wore a bleeding scream costume, no one at school knew it was him because his face was shielded, so that meant for once he could walk with confidence knowing no one would judge him. On page 76, he said "Everything was different now. I was different. Where I usually walked with my head down, trying to avoid being seen, today I walked with my head up, looking around. I wanted to be seen." Since he is insecure about his appearance, he likes to cover his face (if you already didn't know,) wearing a mask will boost his confidence level.…show more content…
August makes it obvious that his favourite day of the year is Halloween because he gets to wear something that disguises his face. I know this because he said on page 73, "I wish every day could be Halloween. We could all wear masks all the time. Then we could walk around and get to know each other before we got to see what we looked like under the masks." It's actually sad that a kid who has no control of how his face is formed, feels this
