The council of Nicaea The council of Nicaea developed a creed that influenced the Christian church for over sixteen hundred years. It was a council that Emperor Constantine presided, it included a group of church bishops and other leaders. Their purpose was to diminish all the dissatisfaction about Christology, and eliminating confusion, controversy, and contention within the church. Emperor Constantine had invited1800 bishops of the Christian church (about 1000 in the East and 800 in the West), but a lesser and unknown number attended. The issues being debated included defining the nature of Jesus Christ, the proper date to celebrate Easter, and other matters. Constantine felt obligated to use his authority to help bring about unity, peace, and love within the church. The Council took place in AD 325 in Nicaea which was located in Asia Minor, east of Constantinople. It is best known for resulting in the Nicene Creed which, as I mentioned, sought to clarify issues of Christology. It also affirmed the deity and eternality of Jesus Christ and defined the relationship between the Father and the Son as “of one substance.” It declared a separation of between Easter and the Jewish passover. For example, in the scriptures it says; “We believe…in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten from the Father, only-begotten, that is, from the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father, through Whom all things were made….” Therefore, these were the main concepts that the council of the Nicaea created amongst many more and is still used by most Christian denominations
