The theme of "Exile" is about a family that had to leave their native country and they encounter many emotions and along the way. The theme of "Crossing the Border" is about a family trying to cross the border while dealing with discrimination. In the poem "Exile", the speaker feels sad "I let myself lie back in deep waters", she feels overwhelmed and sad because she was fleeing to another country and she did not know what the outcome of that action would be.
