The Prince and the Pauper, a fictional novel by Mark Twain, establishes the theme that a worldly society completely disregards the manner of a person and identifies his social class only by the amount of money the person is believed to have. Edward Tudor is the proud prince and heir to the throne of England. In contrast, Tom Canty is but a pauper from a broken home with dreams of one day being royalty. After swapping clothes out of curiosity, the boys' roles are reversed by society because Tom is believed to be the prince, while Edward is thrown out of the castle as he is believed to be but a poor beggar. Throughout the course of the events of the story, the protagonists make every attempt to establish their true identity but no one believes
