More than 5,000 years ago, approximately 3,500 B.C.E, emerged one of the earliest urban societies, the Sumerians. Mesopotamia was located in the Middle east, in modern day Iraq, along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates river. Around a thousand years later arose another river civilization known as the egyptians, located in Egypt in northeast africa. Both of these civilizations share common aspects when it came to their dependency on the rivers, belief in many gods, and their control over their people, but they were also very different when it came to these qualities. The survival of both Sumerian and Egyptians civilization depended on the fertile soil that was provided to them from the rivers. The Egyptians relied on the Nile river, while the Sumerians relied on the Tigris and Euphrates river. Their seasonal flood provided fertile soil, so crops could be produced for the people of these civilizations. The Egyptians had annual flooding that was predictable, while the Sumerians lived in fear and were unable to predict when the next floods would occur, causing several crops and death. Another geographical difference was to for with the land location, Egypt’s land was on either side of the Nile while Mesopotamia was in between the Tigris and Euphrates.The egyptians believed the floods were a gift from the Gods, they had a better relationship with their gods than the Sumerians did. The sumerians made figurines of themselves to pray for the gods while they did other things. Egyptians also believed their Pharaohs were “gods,” they buried them in their own temples along with everything the owned. They had a centralized government with one ruler, the Pharaohs worshiped as gods. Mesopotamia had self controlled city-states , each area was controlled by its own political
