In the book Speak By Laurie Halse Anderson, i think the author is trying to say that popularity is misjudged. Melinda is a once popular girl who was raped at a party last summer, She called the cops and left the area. All of her friends at the party disliked her because she called the police. Melinda never told anyone about what happened that night and became a very im-popular girl who hid in the closet after school every day. I think the author wants readers to believe that not everyone is weird. When Melinda got her first friend Heather, She helped her fit in at Merryweather High.
