Labyrinthitis
Labyrinthitis is an infection of the inner ear. Your inner ear is a fluid-filled system of tubes and canals (labyrinth). Nerve cells in your inner ear send signals for hearing and balance to your brain. When tiny germs (microorganisms) get inside the labyrinth, they harm the cells that send messages to the brain. Labyrinthitis can cause changes in hearing and balance.
Most cases of labyrinthitis come on suddenly and clear up within weeks. If the infection damages parts of the labyrinth, some symptoms may remain (chronic labyrinthitis).
CAUSES
Viruses are the most common cause of labyrinthitis. Viruses that spread into the labyrinth are the same viruses that cause other diseases, such as:
Mononucleosis.
Measles.
