Handsome Jack has PTSD and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He is the deuteragonist in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and the main antagonist in Borderlands 2. In Borderlands 2, Handsome Jack is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hyperion, an advanced weapons manufacturing company that is located on Elpis, the moon orbiting Pandora, a savage and anarchic planet that he hopes to civilize through tyranny, oppression, and violence. His objective in this game is to contest the bandit resistance (including the player’s character, called a Vault Hunter) in finding and opening the Vault, one of several caches of Eridian (alien) technology hidden on Pandora and throughout the universe. Jack is also arrogant, manipulative, ambitious, and vain. As he tells the player characters at the beginning of the game, “I can't just have some psychopathic murderers getting to the vault before I do. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's cute that you all think you're the heroes of this little adventure, but you're not. I'm the damn hero” (Armstrong & Hurley, 2015). He does not respond well to criticism or defeat and demands that he be treated as a king or dictator by the people he holds authority over, usually killing those who offend or do not obey him.
