The second illustration of the use of mise-en-scène and its contribution to characterization is with Rick in Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942) during the scene where Ilsa goes to Rick’s cafe late at night and Rick is drinking. The two aspects of mise-en-scène that important to this scene are acting and setting. Both of these aspects help to characterize Rick, at least within this moment, as a drunkard that is extremely distraught and torn about Ilsa coming to Casablanca. Humphrey Bogart within this scene acts incredibly well to play this scene.
