With a mission to improve the health of people worldwide while also advocating for peace and democracy, The Carter Center has made an impact in over 80 countries across the globe. Founded in 1982 by former President and First Lady Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, this not-for-profit corporation prides themselves on their six word mission statement: “ Wage Peace, Fight Disease, Build Hope.” Based in Atlanta, Georgia, The Carter Center developed from a branch of the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum and was created to further enhance the peace and health of nations and their people worldwide. The Center is partnered with Emory University to build democracy, bring about conflict resolution, advance human rights, raise awareness for mental health, and fight unknown or under-funded tropical diseases. The Board of Trustees is made up of Mr. and Mrs. Carter, the current President of Emory University, 9 members whom are appointed by Emory University’s Board of Trustees, and 10 members that are personally appointed by former President Jimmy Carter. The Carter Center is governed by the Board of Trustees, which manages the assets and property of the organization. Additionally, The Carter Center of Emory University assists the Board of Trustees with the every day operations and oversees programs to help progress the objectives and goals of the Carter Center. Resident experts direct the programs funded by The Carter Center worldwide by designing and implementing agendas with Mr. and Mrs. Carter, world leaders, and non-governmental organizations in the U.S. and abroad. 175 employees and over 150 volunteers, who devoted over 8,742 hours in the 2013-2014 calendar year, staff the Center in Atlanta and field offices in 12 other
