Bobby Jones is a widely known amateur golfer due to his talent and personality. His story encompasses many of the themes we have discussed, such as aging and sports, the beauty of sports, love of the game, and stress/pressure on athletes. There are also some new topics that are explored in Bobby Jones story, such as our expectation of sports figures and honesty in sports. A major theme that was discussed from the poems The Jump Shooter, and Contest was the impact aging has on the ability for an athlete to play a sport. As the film of Bobby Jones portrayed, through the years athletes gain more knowledge and wisdom to help them perform better. Booby Jones was struggling with his anger on the fields, but as he matured and was guided by friends and family he was able to keep his emotion under control. When he was younger he lacked the confidence to perform at his best. He was easily distracted by what the other players said to him, which caused him to loose concentration. In the beginning of his golf journey he told his parents that he didn’t want to become famous, and he didn’t want people to count on him. He just wanted to play the sport for himself, but as he advanced, he became well known to about everyone. Bobby became so stressed before some matches that his arm would spaz and he would throw up. Bobby Jone’s expectation to make history was a major contributor to all the pressure put on him at a young age. Everyone wanted him to win all four major golf tournaments from his time or what they called the “Grand Slam”. As much as the public put pressure on Bobby Jones so did his family. His grandfather wanted him to quit golf and only focus on schooling, but his father wanted him to continue with his golf talent. Bobby was able to accomplish what all of his family wanted for him, but it put more stress on him to do
