“A man’s worth is no greater than his ambition.”, this quote from the famous philosopher Marcus Aurelius demonstrates how important an individual’s passion can show and define who they are as a person. How a person prioritizes their ambition can affect how their relationships with others, and is a very dominant factor in trust. In Blood Diamond directed by Edward Zwick follows a cynical diamond smuggler, Danny Archer, and his journey through the heart of the Sierra Leone Civil War putting everything on the line to find a rare pink diamond that a local fisherman gone slave, Solomon Vandy has hidden near a rebel camp. When an individual’s ambition is driven by greed, they can be unmindful of the needs of others, which can lead to great suffering. As a result of the neglect the person can make poor decisions which lead the to making the situation much worse than it already is, whether that affects themselves or others. This is displayed during the film following Solomon Vandy when he first sees his wife and children again in the camp where they are kept. As soon as their eyes meet, it seems that every other priority of Solomon’s leaves his mind, all focused on his family, completely oblivious to the armed men yelling and threatening him. This demonstrates the way that Solomon’s ambition affects himself and others around him, much like Archer, but points in a positive desire instead of the greed of Archer. At this point in the film Archer sees the way that Solomon acts comparable to himself and begins to notice his ambitions and the way that he has been acting in a different perspective, and becomes open to more expanding views than he had in the
