William Felton Russell, also known as Bill Russell, was a professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association. Mr. Russell played center for the Boston Celtics from 1956 to 1969 in the NBA. Bill Russell was born on February 12, 1934. As a young boy he grew up in the city of West Monroe, LA. His early life was shaped by poor health as he had to battle several different illnesses. When Russell was 10 his family moved to Oakland, California. In California, life for the Russell family proved to be rocky. While his father Charlie found good work, his mother Katie died in 1946 from the flu. He was not very talented right away. He attended McClymonds High School in Oakland, and Russell struggled to get some playing time on the team. By his senior year Russell’s game had picked up making him good enough to earn a spot in the starting line up on the varsity squad. His 6’9” frame earned him some attention from scouts. He attended the University of San Francisco as a walk on eventually earning an athletic scholarship. It wasn’t long in college before the defensively adept Russell proved to be a dominating presence, with a score’s touch and the ability to rebound the basketball. During his three-year varsity career, he led the team to consecutive NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956. He averaged 20.7 points per game and 20.3 rebounds. He finished his amateur career by leading the men’s Olympic gold medal game in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. That same year in the NBA draft Boston Celtics made a deal with the St. Louis Hawks and gave the draft rights to the Celtics for him. The head coach Red Auerbach believed that Russell was the missing piece on the Celtics’ team to win the championship. With Russell in the middle of the floor, the Celtics finished with the best record in the league in 1957. They also went on that year to win the championship over the Hawks in a very hard fought battled seven game series. It was a start of a great championship run for Russell and the Celtics.
