The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara and Araby by James Joyce are two stories quite different yet important topics are exposed. In Bambara’s text, the story is about a group of children coming from a poor neighbourhood in New York and taken to visit Manhattan and F.A.O. Schwarz by a woman, Miss Moore, who is not from their neighbours and wants to extend their common knowledge. She is well appreciated by their parents however, the children, at least Sylvia, who is the narrator, is not pleased by her. Furthermore, during the journey, the children learned how it was outside their neighbourhood, how people could be wealthy enough to buy a toy boat that is costing more than a thousand dollars.
