Babesiosis is an infection that mostly occurs in the Upper and Midwest and Northeastern parts if the United States. They are infections that destroy the red blood cells caused by babesia microti which are parasites. In addition, Ixodes Scapularis ticks are also known as black-legged ticks that are small arachnids that transmit this infection. “Ticks ingest Babesia while feeding off the host, and the parasite multiplies within the tick’s gut walls. The parasites then spread to the tick’s salivary glands” (Mylonakis 5). Therefore, ticks survive by feeding on the host’s blood to complete their life cycle. For that reason, when they are feeding blood, they are transmitting pathogens. Also, this infection could be transmitted by blood transfusion if the donor is diagnosed with it. Another way of transmitting this disease is if pregnant women are infected by babesiosis, the fetus will be infected as well. Furthermore, ticks usually come out in warm weathers like the spring and summer because ticks adapt to bushy, damp, and nature- like areas such as people’s garden. Therefore, people who are likely to get this infection are the ones who are outside the most. Whether it’s walking into the woods or even on long grass or bushes, ticks are most likely found there.
