In order to understand the passage ‘Authority and American Usage’ by David Foster Wallace, I first read the passage and tried to understand the context. To understand the passage in so called “plain English,” I used the Oxford English Dictionary to up the words that were unfamiliar to my me. Therefore, the method I used to rewrite the passage, were combining the dictionary definitions and synonyms of certain words from the OED. However, the OED consisted for many definitions of the certain words, that to translate the passage, I chose the most appropriate the definition that best fit with the context and flowed with the sentences.
