Two Memorialized Leaders Two leaders from two different cultures, and centuries are forever enshrined in sculpture. Augustus of Prima Porta, and Former President Abraham Lincoln, were two leaders whose actions, speeches, and leadership skills won over their people. Both magnificent sculptures have significant similarities and differences with regards to their craftsmanship, skill and grandeur. Regardless, both pieces are truly memorable, breathtaking, and amazingly crafted by the accomplished artists who took the time to pay tribute to these two leaders. The earlier of the two works of art is the “famous portrait” (Fischer 15), “Augustus of Prima Porta” (Adams 230). Each portion and position of this statue are done for a very specific purpose. The total height of the statue is almost seven feet tall (Reuter 2). It is noticeable, at first glance, that this freestanding marble sculpture shows Augustus posed with his weight mostly on his right leg. (Fischer 15). Beginning with his head, it is noticeable that Augustus was memorialized at the prime of his life (Reuter 2). It is not a true replication of Augustus but an idealized one (Adams 230). The artist’s use of facial construction, “consists of a broad cranium and narrow chin, sharp ridged eyebrows, aquiline nose and a rounded mouth”. (Elia, Erickson, Lee and Yu). Other features and characteristics are the smooth and idealized face, the way the hair is shaped into short curved shape locks, and a neck that is both wide and short (Elia et al.). Moving south, the breastplate is filled with different pictorial images that have been debated on their significance to Augustus himself. The most popular viewpoint is that Caelus, the sky god, is depicted at the top. (Elia at al.). Below Caelus is believed to be Sol, the Sun god, in a four horse chariot, and Aurora riding a female figure (Elia et al.) The Lincoln Memorial was created with some of the same Doric features as the Parthenon (“Abraham Lincoln: Lincoln Memorial” 5), and Augustus’s stance is taken after the Greek sculptor Polyclitus in his work, Doryphoros (Reuter, 2). Marble was used to create both works of art although, limestone was also used in creating the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial, and Augustus’s statue both symbolize the kind of leaders they each were. These memorials, having been created after a civil war in their country took place, showing the strength and love they had for their country and people. Two powerful leaders forever enshrined in a similar fashion from two separate centuries, is the most basic similarity of all. Their hands being used to tell of their status and character.
