PREPARATION OUTLINE
Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about genetically modified foods (GMOs).
Thesis Statement: To understand genetically modified organisms for food, it’s important to look at what they are, where they are found, and if they are safe to eat.
Introduction
Attention Getter: Did you know that most of the food we consume on a daily basis is in some way genetically modified?
Overview of Main Points: Today I am going to talk to you about genetically modified organisms for food, otherwise known as GMOs. I will go over what GMOs are, where they are found, and if they are safe to eat. (What is a GMO?)
I. GMOs are plants created through gene splicing techniques of biotechnology. In other words, the plant DNA structure is…show more content… B. Support for 1st main point:
This genetic modification is done for reasons such as growth enhancement (make it grow faster and/or bigger), to enhance the nutritional value, and for herbicide resistance used in the field. (Science Scope Magazine).
(Transition) Now that I have explained what GMOs are, I will now discuss where they are found.
II. U.S. consumers eat many products derived from GMO crops which include; cornmeal, oils, and sugars.
A. Support for 2nd main point:
According to the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the top three GMO crops are corn, cotton, and soybeans.
B. Support for 2nd main point:
According to the Institute of Responsible Technology, several ingredients are derived from soybeans and corn. (Transition) Now that you know which foods contain GMOs, let’s discuss whether they are safe to eat.
III. Currently, there is no scientific evidence that GMOs are harmful.
A. Support for 3rd main point
According to the FDA, they are safe, and are “substantially similar” to conventional
