Rape. It is not a topic to be taken lightly by the vast majority of the human population. Women cringe and men turn their heads, many people rapidly push the thought to the back of their minds and remain ignorant to the topic; however, few think of the impact or effects it could have on someone’s mindset and skills in a long term point of view, whether it be negative or positive. Rape is not a positive occurrence, but it did have an impact on one of history’s greatest early female painters, Artemisia Gentileschi. Just what was the cause for Gentileschi’s rape and what were the effects on her? Gentileschi fought many hardships to gain respect as a woman in her age, her trial opened doors to great opportunities for her which lead to the development of some of the best artwork historians know of, and the cause of her rape was a result of her mentor’s attraction for her.…show more content…
Orazio had come to like Tassi’s work and requested that he be Artemisia’s mentor in the arts. In 1611, the rape occurred in the Gentileschi household and carried on. Tassi had Gentileschi convinced that he would marry her; however, it never happened. When Gentileschi’s father had received word of this he immediately pressed charges against Tassi. In her trial, Gentileschi was interrogated and tortured by way of the thumbscrews and a public pelvic exam to confirm her testimony against Tassi. Gentileschi did end up winning the nine month trial and Tassi was sentenced to prison, but it would forever change Gentileschi’s life.
