First of all, parents should provide love and support for children. However, in Connie’s case there was no love, no support whatsoever, but instead Connie was maltreated by the mother. In fact the mother never spoke affectionately to Connie. In the story, the mother was scolding Connie saying “stop gawking at yourself, who are you? You think you’re pretty?” (83); this led Connie to be avarice and desirous of receiving love and care from strangers. Many readers blamed Connie for interacting and giving in to Arnold Friend but who causes the need of love that Connie is missing out on. For this reason, Connie was enjoying the words “beautiful, cute, sweetie” from Arnold. “She spoke sullenly, careful to show no interest or pleasure” (86) Connie
